Ruptured Saline Implants

Ruptured saline implants may occur. Although some manufacturers claim that saline implants will last a lifetime, most evidence points to this not being the case. Rather, most people will need to have some surgical procedure at some time in the future to repair or replace ruptured or otherwise damaged implants. It is usually obvious that the saline implant has ruptured in that the breast will look deflated. The size and shape of the breast often deflates quickly. In some situations, a small leak can go unnoticed for some time. Because there are few side effects from a leak that is very small, many women do not realize that it has occurred. Saline implants are made of a salt-water mixture, which is similar to the natural fluids in the body.

Fast Facts

  • About five percent of women can expect to have implant leaks or deflation within the first three years of having the implant.
  • Less than one percent of patients have any type of infection from the implants they receive.
