Most women do not realize that a simple breast augmentation surgery will not fix drooping, sagging breasts caused by weight gain or pregnancies. Breast implants will make the breasts larger and fuller, but they may cause back problems if they are not adjusted and pushed up.

The New York Times recently found that some surgeons are withholding information from their female patients in need of breast reconstruction. A new surgical procedure, invented by doctors at the Indiana University plastic surgery group has been developed to combine two popular surgeries: the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation.

The surgeon performs a regular tummy tuck procedure, removing excess fat and skin from the abdominal wall. Then, this skin is used to create a flap that is transformed into a new breast. This surgery is also ideal for breast cancer survivors who have had a mastectomy and have been free from radiation therapy for over six months.

The popularity of breast implants has grown exponentially since 2000. The procedure has become more affordable and the recovery time is shorter. The fake breasts look and feel natural, and can be made of saline or silicone.

Unfortunately, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has reported that one in eight women who undergo breast augmentation develop breast cancer at some point in their lives.  The good news, however, is that women who have implants and have contracted cancer have a better chance of survival and better cosmetic results after radiation therapy.

Recent research has shown that larger-breasted women should use traditional methods of breast augmentation, rather than the newer procedure of fat grafting.  Women who have this operation have experience some post-operational problems.

Some women complain about lumps that make mammograms, which detect breast cancer, much more difficult.  They can skew the results.  Also, at times, the fat tissue may actually die after it has been injected into the patient’s breasts.  This can cause infection and serious problems.

One of the biggest factors that keeps women from getting breast augmentation surgeries is fear.  Women constantly hear horror stories about surgical procedures going horribly wrong.  Infections and complications are constantly written about in newspapers and magazines, but their occurrences are actually quite rare, when compared to successful surgeries.

Many women are disappointed with the look of their bodies after pregnancy. The stress of carrying a baby for nine months can cause parts to droop and sag. This leaves women looking older than they really are, and upset about the loss of their youth.

Many of these ladies turn to plastic surgery to reverse the effects of pregnancy. Tummy tucks and liposuction procedures give the patient her thin, athletic figure back. Also breast augmentation and lifts can put the patient’s breasts back where they belong.

Though rarely this does occur, research and development in the field of plastic surgery continues to advance.
