The Basics of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can be done in one of several ways. One approach involves the insertion of a silicone bag under the breast. This placement is called “submammary.” Another approach involves inserting the silicone bag under the chest muscle. This is called “subpectoral.” Next, the bag is filled with salt water, thereby expanding the breast area, and giving the patient a fuller bosom, increased cup size, better contour, and more cleavage.

Preparing for Breast Augmentation

Are you planning on augmenting your breasts? If so you will need to have some blood tests done. The blood tests need to be performed within two weeks of your surgery so that the results are up to date. Your surgeon will probably require a complete blood count (CBC). The CBC measures your levels of white and red blood cells, among other things. If your red blood cells are too low, you could be anemic and not fit to have surgery. If, on the other hand, your white blood cells are too high, you could have an infection or virus your body is trying to fight off.

Nipple Augmentation

Nipple augmentation is a surgical procedure to change the size of the nipple. It can be performed on women or men. Fairly often, it is performed in tandem with breast augmentation. Nipple augmentation can involve one of two approaches, making it larger, or making it smaller.

Memory Gel (Cohesive Gel) Implants

If you have decided to get breast augmentation surgery, you must next decide what type of implants to get. Implants come in two types, saline filled or silicone filled. Silicone-filled implants are often called cohesive gel, memory gel or even “gummy bear” implants.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is also known as mammoplasty and involves the reduction of excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and alleviate the discomfort that typically is caused by overly large breasts.

Breast Lift

Over time, a woman’s breasts change. They may lose their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity, and heredity.

Breast Implant Incision Options

If you choose to have breast implants, your surgeon will make an incision for your breast augmentation in one of four places. The first is around the areola of the nipple. The areola is the colored area around the nipple. The scar blends well and is hard to detect. This approach also allows for precise placement.

Another approach is through the armpit. This is known as a trans-axillary incision, and while common folklore holds that this scar is not very noticeable, quite often it can be more prominent than other scars, and will be visible when you wear sleeveless shirts.

Breast Implant Choices

Once you have made up your mind to have breast augmentation surgery, you must next decide what type of implants to get. Implants come in two types, saline filled or silicone filled. Silicone-filled implants are often called cohesive gel, memory gel or even “gummy bear” implants.

Breast Augmentation: The Recovery

If you have breast augmentation surgery, your recovery time will vary with your doctor, the technique he or she used to perform the surgery, the type of incision, your body type and the size of the implant. Many doctors, and quite a few women who have had the procedure, claim a woman can be back to work within a week. Chances are that while you would likely be able to work if you needed to, it would only be in a non-strenuous job and you would not have made anything like a full recovery.

Breast Augmentation Costs

There are so many possible options and methods for breast augmentation that it can be very difficult to answer the question of how much a breast augmentation will cost. The cost will vary widely. Some factors that will influence the cost include the skill of the surgeon, the surgeon’s location, whether the surgery is done in the surgeon’s office or in a hospital, what type of surgery you choose, and what type of anesthesia is used.
